Every Canadian registered aircraft needs a journey log. It is not optional and it is not a formality: under CAR 605.92, the owner of an aircraft is required to keep a journey log, and under CAR 605.94 the particulars set out in Schedule I — flight details, air time, maintenance performed, defects, and abnormal occurrences — must be entered in it by the person the regulation names, at the time the regulation specifies. This logbook gives you every one of those columns in a clean, legible layout, so compliance is a matter of filling in the boxes rather than interpreting them.

When does the journey log have to be on board?

More often than many owners think. CAR 605.95 prohibits takeoff unless the journey log is on board the aircraft, with one main exception: when it is not planned that the aircraft will land and shut down anywhere other than the point of departure. Practically, that means circuits and local flights returning to your home field can leave the log behind — but the moment you plan to land and shut down at another aerodrome, even for a $200 hamburger, the log comes with you. That is exactly why a journey log needs to be practical to carry, not just a binder in the hangar.

How long do entries have to be kept?

Under CAR 605.94(3), the owner must retain every journey log entry for not less than one year — and in practice, a complete unbroken journey log history is one of the strongest things you can hand a buyer at resale. When this log fills up, the old volume goes on the shelf and the chronology continues in the next one.
