Description

Built for the way a flight is actually planned

The ASA CX-3 replaces the trial-and-error of the whiz wheel with menus that follow the sequence of a real flight plan. Work down the list — wind, heading, groundspeed, time en route, fuel — and each answer carries forward into the next calculation automatically, so a full nav log takes a fraction of the keystrokes. During ground school that means you spend your study time learning the concepts, not fighting the tool. In the exam room it means the navigation section stops being a race against the clock.

The colour screen separates what you entered from what it calculated, with units shown on every value, so a mis-keyed number stands out instead of hiding inside a chain of arithmetic. A Favourite key jumps to the function you use most, and an aircraft profile stores the weight-and-balance data for the aeroplane you actually fly.

Approved for Transport Canada written exams

The CX-3 is on Transport Canada’s official list of accepted electronic computers for flight crew examinations — PSTAR, PPAER, CPAER, INRAT, ATPL, all of them. It is equally accepted on FAA knowledge tests, which matters if you are doing one of our FAA conversion courses.

Know the invigilator’s procedure before exam day: memory must be cleared in front of the invigilator before and after the exam. On the CX-3 that is done by removing and reinstalling the batteries — it takes a moment and your invigilator will expect it. It also means any aircraft profiles or saved data are wiped, so don’t count on them being there after your write.

CX-3 or a mechanical E6-B?

Honest answer from a flight instructor: it isn’t either/or for most students. Instructors still teach the manual E6-B because it builds real understanding of the wind triangle — and it never runs out of batteries. The CX-3 is what you bring to the written, where speed and accuracy are worth money.

CX-3 electronic Mechanical E6-B
Speed on the exam Fast — chained calculations, no interpolating hash marks Slower, and easier to misread under pressure
Teaches the concept Less — it gives you the answer More — you see the wind triangle work
TC exam approved Yes Yes
Batteries 4× AAA (included) None, ever

Many of our students learn on a circular E6-B or the classic metal slide E6-B during ground school, then write the exam with the CX-3. If you are buying one device only and the written is the goal, buy this one.

What it calculates

  • Wind: heading, groundspeed, headwind/crosswind components
  • True airspeed, Mach number, density altitude
  • Fuel burn, endurance, and requirements
  • Weight & balance with centre of gravity
  • Cloud base and standard atmosphere
  • Glide, climb and descent (rate and angle)
  • Holding pattern entry and timing
  • Time, speed and distance in any combination
  • 12 categories of unit conversions
  • Clock (UTC/local), stopwatch and countdown timer

Backlit keys and Night/Daylight display themes keep it usable in a dim exam room or a dark cockpit, non-volatile memory holds your settings between sessions, and firmware updates load over micro-USB.

In the box

  • CX-3 Flight Computer
  • 4× AAA batteries
  • Snap-on protective cover (doubles as a stand on the back of the unit)

Why buy it here

Priced in Canadian dollars, shipped flat-rate from within Canada — no exchange-rate surprises, no duty at the door, no waiting on a cross-border parcel three weeks before your write. And because we run the PPL and CPL ground schools our students take these exams through, we teach with this unit and can actually answer questions about it.
