It’s the foundational human factors text for Canadian pilot training and the companion reference for the Human Factors for Aviation – Advanced Handbook.

What’s Inside

The handbook builds around a simple four-stage model of pilot performance — gathering information, processing it, making decisions, and acting on those decisions — then examines where and why errors creep into each stage. Topics include:

• Vision, hearing, and sensory illusions, including night illusions like the black-hole effect
• The body and stress — fatigue, hypoxia, alcohol, and the physical and emotional factors that quietly degrade performance
• Decision-making and judgement, including why pilots between 100 and 500 hours are statistically at the greatest risk
• Crew Resource Management and communication
• Learning to fly effectively — active learning, mental preparation, and getting the most from your instructor

Each concept is grounded in real accident analysis. The book’s central case study — a Beechcraft C99 that struck trees on a night visual approach to Moosonee, Ontario, with the runway lights in sight — shows how a chain of small, individually survivable errors (an unfamiliar illusion, a skipped altitude call, a cockpit design limitation) can combine into a fatal accident between two competent, well-regarded pilots. It’s a sobering and instructive read for any student pilot.

Exercises at the end of key chapters reinforce the material through active participation — the same learning approach the book itself recommends.

Written for pilots working toward their Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), though the principles apply to instructors, dispatchers, AMEs, and anyone else in the aviation system. Human factors questions appear on Transport Canada written examinations, making this essential exam preparation as well as genuinely practical safety reading.

This handbook is one of a series developed by the Air Canada Human Factors Project Team for Transport Canada, in response to the ICAO requirement that human factors training be included in all aircrew licensing.
