Every instructor has told a student that fatigue is dangerous. This book is about what happens when that same instructor then takes off tired in marginal weather — and the student quietly decides the lecture was just something Transport Canada requires you to say. Published by Transport Canada and prepared by the Air Canada Human Factors Project Team, the Instructor’s Guide is the third volume in the TC human factors series, developed in response to ICAO’s requirement that human factors training be part of all aircrew licensing. Where the Basic and Advanced Handbooks teach the knowledge, this volume teaches the instruction: it is written for pilots preparing for a flight instructor rating and for experienced instructors, and it is designed to be used alongside Transport Canada’s Flight Instructor Guide (TP 975).

What’s inside

The book is organized around four keys to human factors practice — knowledge, awareness, attitude, and discipline — and then gets relentlessly practical. It walks through how to integrate human factors into every phase of instruction: ground school, preparatory ground instruction, pre-flight briefings, in-flight teaching, and post-flight debriefs, including two fully worked examples built on standard Flight Instructor Guide lesson plans. There are ready-to-use classroom scenarios, case-study techniques, and question banks for informal assessment in the aircraft.
