Active Runway

The active runway is the runway currently in use for take-offs and landings at an aerodrome. At controlled airports, the active runway is selected by ATC based on wind direction, runway condition, noise abatement requirements, and traffic flow. At uncontrolled airports, pilots self-select the most appropriate runway, typically into wind.

Determining the Active Runway

• Listen to ATIS or AWOS before arrival — the active runway is included in the broadcast
• At uncontrolled aerodromes, monitor the ATF/MF and listen for traffic broadcasts
• Check the windsock to determine wind direction — land into wind when possible
• The CFS includes preferred runway information for specific aerodromes based on noise abatement or local considerations

Runway Changes

If the active runway changes after you have commenced an approach, ATC will advise and may issue a new clearance. At uncontrolled aerodromes, listen for other pilots’ broadcasts and be alert to a runway change due to shifting winds.
