Aerodrome
An aerodrome is any area of land, water (including the frozen surface thereof), or other supporting surface used, designed, prepared, equipped, or set apart for use — in whole or in part — for the arrival, departure, movement, or servicing of aircraft. This is the broad legal definition under the Aeronautics Act.
Aerodrome vs. Airport
All airports are aerodromes, but not all aerodromes are airports. An airport is an aerodrome certified by Transport Canada under CARs Part III. Certification imposes additional requirements for safety equipment, lighting, and operations. A grass strip used by a local flying club is an aerodrome but not an airport.
Types of Aerodromes in Canada
- Certified airports: Meet TC certification standards; include all major commercial airports
- Registered aerodromes: Listed in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS); may be private or public
- Unregistered aerodromes: Legal to use but not listed in the CFS; pilot assumes greater responsibility for information gathering
- Heliports: Aerodromes designed specifically for helicopter operations
- Water aerodromes: Designated water areas for float plane operations
On the TC Written Exam
The distinction between aerodrome, airport, and certified airport is regularly tested. Know the legal definition and that the CFS contains information on registered aerodromes including frequencies, elevation, runway length, and available services.
