Aircraft Engine

An aircraft engine is any engine used or intended to be used for the propulsion of aircraft, including reciprocating (piston) engines, turbine engines (turbojets, turbofans, turboprops, turboshafts), and electric motors used for propulsion.

Types of Aircraft Engines

  • Reciprocating (piston): Most common in general aviation; uses pistons, cylinders, and a crankshaft; carbureted or fuel-injected
  • Turboprop: Gas turbine connected to a propeller through a reduction gearbox; dominant in regional transport
  • Turbofan: High-bypass ratio turbine; the standard in commercial aviation for fuel efficiency
  • Turbojet: Pure jet; used in high-speed and military applications
  • Turboshaft: Gas turbine with shaft power output; used in helicopters

Certification and Maintenance

Aircraft engines must be certified by Transport Canada before installation and maintained by licensed AMEs per the approved maintenance schedule. Any engine modification or repair must use approved data.
