Never Exceed Speed
Never exceed speed (VNE) is the maximum speed at which an aircraft may be operated under any circumstances. It is depicted by a red radial line on the airspeed indicator. Exceeding VNE risks structural failure due to aerodynamic flutter, dynamic overpressure, or loss of control. VNE is a hard limit — there is no safe margin beyond it.
Flutter
At high speeds, aerodynamic and inertial forces can excite natural resonant frequencies in the aircraft structure (particularly control surfaces). If the resonant frequency matches the forcing frequency, oscillations grow rapidly — this is flutter. Flutter onset can destroy control surfaces within seconds. VNE is set well below the demonstrated flutter speed.
VNE vs. VNO
- VNE (Never Exceed): Absolute maximum — red line; never exceed under any circumstance
- VNO (Normal Operating Limit): Upper end of the green arc; maximum for smooth air; in turbulence or gusty conditions, slow to VNO or below
Inadvertent VNE Exceedance
If VNE is exceeded, the aircraft must be grounded and inspected before further flight. The POH and maintenance manual specify what inspection is required. Do not attempt to “test” the aircraft — even if it appears undamaged, flutter testing and structural inspection are required.
On the TC Written Exam
Know the ASI colour coding, including VNE (red line) and VNO (upper end of green arc). Know what happens structurally at excessive speed.
