Normal Operating Limit Speed

Normal operating limit speed (V_NO) is the maximum structural cruising speed — the upper limit of the green arc on the airspeed indicator. Aircraft may be operated at or below V_NO in any conditions; above V_NO, operation is restricted to smooth air only (the yellow arc / caution range).

V_NO in Turbulence

In turbulence or gusty conditions, the aircraft should be slowed to V_NO or below. The yellow arc (V_NO to V_NE) is the caution range — flying in this range is only safe in smooth air. A gust encountered at speeds in the yellow arc can produce structural loads exceeding limits. In rough air or thunderstorm conditions, slow to V_A (maneuvering speed) — well below V_NO.
