Radio Operator’s Certificate (ROC-A) — Learn From the Examiner

If you’ll transmit on an aeronautical radio in Canada — as a pilot, a drone operator, or working airside at an airport — you need a ROC-A. This course prepares you to pass the ISED examination and, more importantly, to sound like you belong on the frequency. Built and taught by an ISED examiner and ROC-A curriculum developer.

Radio operator's certificate aeronautical training for pilots, drone operators, and airport workers
Who Needs a ROC-A

One Certificate, Many Careers

Student Pilots

Every pilot needs a ROC-A to transmit on aviation frequencies — it’s one of the three exams on your path to a licence, and the radio skills carry into every flight you’ll ever make.

Drone (RPAS) Operators

Advanced drone operations often require radio communication on aeronautical frequencies — near aerodromes, in controlled airspace, or coordinating with crewed traffic. The ROC-A is your ticket onto the frequency.

Airport & Ground Personnel

Vehicle operators, ground crew, and airside workers who communicate on aviation radio need a ROC-A — and employers notice candidates who already hold one.

Course Content

From Regulations to Real Radio Calls

Real-life scenarios designed for deep learning — not memorizing answers, but becoming genuinely proficient on the radio before you ever key the mic.

Introduction & Regulations

What the ROC-A covers, and the radio regulations every certificate holder operates under.

Ground Stations

Who you’re talking to: towers, flight service, UNICOM, and the stations on the other end of your calls.

General Procedures

The structure of proper radio work — who speaks, when, and in what format.

Communicating on the Radio

Normal communications, phraseology, and the calls you’ll make every day — practiced through realistic scenarios.

Emergency Communications

MAYDAY, PAN PAN, and the procedures that matter most when something goes wrong.

Practice Exam

A final practice examination built from real ISED ROC-A exam questions, so test day holds no surprises.

FAQ

ROC-A — FAQ

Who needs a ROC-A?

Anyone who transmits on aeronautical radio frequencies in Canada — pilots, drone operators whose operations involve aviation radio, and airport or ground personnel who communicate on aviation frequencies. The certificate is issued under ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada) regulations.

Does the ROC-A expire?

No — once issued, your Radio Operator’s Certificate is valid for life. It’s a one-time investment in a credential you’ll use for your entire aviation career.

How do I take the actual exam?

The ROC-A examination is administered by ISED-accredited examiners. We offer official ROC-A examinations — your course instructor is an accredited examiner — so you can study and test through one provider.

Is this course included in the PPL Ground School?

Yes — our Private Pilot Ground School includes this entire course at no extra charge, along with PSTAR preparation. Only purchase it separately if you’re not enrolling in the full ground school.

Do drone pilots really need this?

If your RPAS operations involve transmitting on aeronautical frequencies — such as operating near aerodromes or coordinating with crewed traffic — you need a ROC-A to legally use the radio. As advanced drone operations grow, it’s becoming a standard credential for professional operators.
