Certificate of Airworthiness
A Certificate of Airworthiness (C of A) is the document issued by Transport Canada certifying that an aircraft, at the time of issue, conforms to its type design and is in a condition for safe operation. It remains in force as long as the aircraft is maintained in accordance with the applicable maintenance requirements.
Types of C of A
- Standard C of A: Issued for type-certificated aircraft meeting all applicable standards; permits commercial and private operations
- Special C of A: Issued for aircraft that do not meet all standard requirements; may restrict operations (e.g., experimental amateur-built)
- Flight Permit: A temporary authorization issued when a standard C of A cannot be maintained — permits a specific flight to a maintenance base or for specific purposes
Validity
The C of A itself does not expire, but it becomes invalid if the aircraft is not maintained in accordance with the approved maintenance schedule, if applicable ADs are not complied with, or if the aircraft is modified without approval. The PIC is responsible for confirming a valid C of A is in force before flight.
