Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)
An Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) is an electronic display device used by flight crew to perform a variety of functions that were previously accomplished using paper and manuals. EFBs can display charts, approach plates, weight and balance, performance calculations, weather, and aircraft documentation.
EFB Classes
- Class 1 EFB: Consumer tablet (iPad, etc.) with aviation apps; not mounted in the aircraft; no TC approval required for supplemental use
- Class 2 EFB: Mounted in the aircraft but not connected to aircraft systems; may replace paper charts if approved
- Class 3 EFB: Installed avionics that replace paper and are integrated with aircraft systems; requires full avionics certification
Common EFB Applications
- ForeFlight, Garmin Pilot, FlyQ — IFR chart subscription apps widely used in Canadian GA
- Performance calculation apps (takeoff/landing distance, weight and balance)
- Electronic POH/AFM access
- Weather display (METARs, TAFs, GFA, radar)
Backup Requirements
If an EFB is used as the primary source for charts or approach plates in IFR operations, a backup source must be available. Many operators carry a secondary device or maintain a printed backup for critical approaches. Always ensure the EFB database is current before IFR flight.
