Flaps Down Speed

Flaps down speed (V_FE) is the maximum airspeed at which the flaps may be extended or used in flight. Exceeding V_FE with flaps extended risks structural damage to the flap system. V_FE is depicted by the upper limit of the white arc on the airspeed indicator.

Flap Speed Schedule

Most aircraft have multiple flap extension speeds — a maximum speed for each flap setting. The POH specifies these limits. For example: Flaps 10° — V_FE 110 KIAS; Flaps 20° — 95 KIAS; Flaps 30° — 85 KIAS. The white arc on the ASI shows the overall V_FE for full flap extension.

In Turbulence

Flaps extended in turbulence are a structural risk. In moderate or severe turbulence, retract flaps (if airspeed permits — stay below V_FE during retraction) and reduce to maneuvering speed V_A. Do not attempt to retract flaps rapidly at high speed in turbulence.
