Readback
Readback is the act of repeating a received ATC message in its entirety (or the specified elements) to confirm receipt and understanding. Readbacks are mandatory for certain message types and are a fundamental safety layer in ATC communication — they give controllers the opportunity to detect and correct misunderstandings before they become accidents.
Mandatory Readback Items
- Route clearances (IFR)
- Runway assignments
- Altitude assignments
- Heading assignments
- Frequency changes
- Transponder codes
- Hold-short instructions — always, verbatim
- VFR clearances through controlled airspace
Correct Readback Format
Read back in the same order as received; include your callsign at the end. Example: ATC says “Air Canada 123, climb to flight level 350, wind 270 at 15.” Readback: “Climbing flight level 350, Air Canada 123.” For runway holds: read back the exact runway designation — “Hold short of runway 24 right, Air Canada 123.”
On the TC Written Exam
Readback requirements are tested in air law and communications. Know which items require mandatory readback and that hold-short instructions always require a verbatim readback.
