Restricted Area

A restricted area is a designated airspace of defined dimensions within which the flight of aircraft is restricted or prohibited for specific reasons — typically military activities, VIP protection, or security-sensitive areas. Restricted areas in Canada are designated Class F airspace.

Restricted vs. Danger vs. Advisory Areas

• Restricted area (Class F Restricted): Flight prohibited without specific authorization from the controlling authority
• Advisory area (Class F Advisory): Flight is not prohibited but hazardous activities occur; exercise extreme caution and obtain information before entering
• Danger area: Activities dangerous to flight may exist; advisory only; pilot enters at own risk

Temporary Restricted Areas

Temporary restricted areas (NOTAMs) are issued for special events (royal visits, major sporting events, space launches, emergency operations). These must be checked as part of every pre-flight NOTAM review. Violating a restricted area can result in certificate suspension and interception.
