Very Low Frequency (VLF)
Very Low Frequency (VLF) refers to the radio frequency band from 3 to 30 kHz. In aviation, VLF was used for the now-decommissioned Omega Navigation System, which transmitted at 10–14 kHz. VLF signals penetrate seawater and can communicate with submerged submarines — the same long-wavelength propagation allowed Omega to provide worldwide navigation coverage.
Current Status
Omega was shut down in 1997 and VLF navigation is no longer in operational use in civil aviation. GPS has replaced all VLF-based systems. VLF radio communication continues for submarine operations.
