Radio
Radio, in aviation, refers to the airborne two-way communication system used to exchange information between pilots and ATC, flight service, and other aircraft. Radio communication is mandatory in controlled airspace and essential for safe flight operations.
Aviation Radio Bands
- VHF (118–137 MHz): Primary aviation communication; line-of-sight; standard for all civilian ATC communication in Canada
- HF (3–30 MHz): Long-range oceanic and remote area communication; non-line-of-sight (ionospheric bounce)
- UHF (225–400 MHz): Military aviation communications
Radio Discipline
Keep transmissions brief and accurate. Listen before transmitting. Use standard phraseology. Include your callsign in every transmission. Never use the radio to tie up a frequency unnecessarily — in an emergency, a congested frequency can cost lives.
