Visual Terminal Area Charts (VTA)
Visual Terminal Area Charts (VTA) are topographic aeronautical charts published at a scale of 1:250,000 for use in navigating in and around Canada’s busiest terminal areas. The larger scale (more detailed) compared to VNCs makes VTAs particularly useful for precise visual navigation near major airports.
VTA Coverage
VTAs are published for major Canadian terminal areas including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal, Québec City, and Halifax. Each VTA covers the immediate area around the terminal, showing the control zone, TCA structure, navaids, reporting points, and significant visual landmarks in greater detail than the VNC.
When to Use a VTA
Use a VTA whenever flying in or near a major terminal area — particularly if making a VFR entry into complex controlled airspace. The increased detail aids in identifying VFR reporting points, airspace boundaries, and landmarks that may be difficult to distinguish on the smaller-scale VNC.
