VORTAC (VOR/TACAN)

VORTAC is a navigation facility combining a VOR (Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range) and a TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) system at a single location. The combination provides VOR azimuth guidance and TACAN distance information (DME) to both military and civilian aircraft.

VOR vs. VORTAC

A standalone VOR provides only azimuth (radial) information. A VOR-DME adds civilian DME distance. A VORTAC adds the military TACAN component, but civilian aircraft use it the same way as a VOR-DME — the DME component provides distance. Most civil aircraft GPS systems include VORTAC as a waypoint type in their navigation databases.
