Aerial Work

Aerial work is a commercial air service other than an air transport service or a flight training service. It encompasses a wide range of specialized operations where an aircraft is used as a working platform or tool.

Examples of Aerial Work

  • Aerial photography and surveying
  • Crop dusting and agricultural spraying
  • Pipeline and powerline patrol
  • Fire suppression and water bombing
  • Banner towing and aerial advertising
  • Aerial application of firefighting retardants
  • Power line and seismic surveying

Regulatory Context

Aerial work operators in Canada require an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) under CARs Part VII, Subpart 2. The specific requirements depend on the type of operation and the aircraft used. Pilots must hold the appropriate licence and ratings for the operation.

On the TC Written Exam

The definition of aerial work and how it differs from air transport service and flight training service is tested in the air law sections of both the PPL and CPL exams.
