Air transport service
An air transport service is a commercial air service for the transportation of persons or goods by aircraft, in which the passenger or shipper pays a fare or freight charge. It is the most common type of commercial air service in Canada, encompassing scheduled airline operations and charter services.
Regulatory Requirements
Air transport service operators must hold an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and comply with CARs Part VII, Subpart 1. Requirements include an Operations Manual, a Maintenance Control Manual, specific crew training and checking programs, and a Safety Management System (SMS) for larger operators.
Distinction from Other Commercial Services
Air transport service involves transporting persons or goods for hire. Aerial work is a commercial service not involving passenger or cargo carriage. Flight training is a separate category. The distinction determines which regulatory subpart and requirements apply.
