Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR)

Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) is a radar system used by approach and departure control to detect and track aircraft in the terminal area, typically within 60 NM of the airport. ASR provides controllers with azimuth and range information to sequence arriving and departing traffic.

ASR vs. Other Radar Types

  • ASR: Terminal radar, 60 NM range, used for approach/departure sequencing
  • AASR: Long-range en route radar for ACC coverage
  • PSR (Primary): Detects aircraft skin return — no transponder needed
  • SSR (Secondary): Interrogates transponder — provides altitude, identity, in addition to position
