Alerting Service
Alerting service is a service provided to notify appropriate organizations regarding aircraft in need of search and rescue aid, and to assist such organizations as required. It is provided by ATC units and FIC throughout Canadian airspace.
How It Works
When an aircraft becomes overdue, fails to make a position report, or declares an emergency, the responsible facility initiates the INCERFA (Uncertainty), ALERFA (Alert), or DETRESFA (Distress) phases and coordinates with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC).
Why Filing a Flight Plan Matters
Filing a flight plan activates alerting service for your flight. Without a filed plan, no one is tracking your progress and there is no trigger for SAR if you fail to arrive. For any cross-country flight, always file — it is the cheapest insurance policy available.
