Composite Flight Plan

A composite flight plan combines an IFR flight plan with a VFR flight plan for different portions of the same flight. The pilot operates under IFR rules for one portion (typically the en route segment in controlled airspace) and VFR rules for another portion (typically departure or arrival at an uncontrolled aerodrome).

When It Is Used

Composite flight plans are used when the departure or destination aerodrome is in uncontrolled airspace where IFR service is not available, but the en route portion requires IFR separation in controlled airspace. The pilot files both flight plans simultaneously and coordinates the switch between IFR and VFR with ATC at the transition point.

VFR Portion Requirements

During the VFR portion, the pilot must comply with all applicable VFR weather minima. A VFR flight plan must be activated for the VFR segment, and the pilot must close it on arrival or within one hour of ETA.
