Defence VFR (DVFR)

Defence VFR (DVFR) is a VFR flight plan filed by a pilot who intends to penetrate Canadian or US Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) airspace. DVFR flight plans contain specific information required by NORAD and air defence authorities to identify and track the flight as a non-threatening penetration.

DVFR vs. IFR for ADIZ Entry

Both DVFR and IFR flight plans are acceptable for ADIZ penetration. An IFR flight plan automatically satisfies ADIZ notification requirements if it includes the ADIZ entry point and time. A DVFR plan is the VFR equivalent — required for VFR aircraft entering the ADIZ. Private pilots most commonly use DVFR plans for cross-border general aviation flights.

DVFR Requirements

  • File at least 30 minutes before ADIZ entry
  • Include estimated time and position of ADIZ penetration
  • Maintain two-way radio communication
  • Squawk the assigned transponder code
  • Report position at specified ADIZ entry reporting points
