Designated Intersection
A designated intersection is a point defined by two or more navigation facility radials, bearings, or distance measurements that is named and charted for use in IFR navigation. Designated intersections are used to define reporting points, route segments, approach fixes, and holding patterns on IFR charts.
Naming Convention
Designated intersections in Canada are assigned five-letter pronounceable names (e.g., OTNIK, DUVAT, HALEY). These names are used in ATC clearances and flight plans. The intersection’s position is defined by the intersecting radials or bearings charted on the IFR en route chart.
Types
- Compulsory reporting points: Depicted by solid triangle; report position without being asked
- Non-compulsory reporting points: Depicted by open triangle; report only when requested by ATC
- Approach fixes: The Initial Approach Fix (IAF), Intermediate Fix (IF), and Final Approach Fix (FAF) are defined intersections on instrument approach procedures
