Intersection
An intersection is a point defined by the crossing of two or more radials, bearings, or distance measurements from navigation facilities. Intersections serve as reporting points, route change points, approach fixes, and holding pattern entries on IFR charts. In approach contexts, intersections may also be identified using GPS/GNSS coordinates.
Identifying an Intersection
To identify a VOR intersection, tune two VOR receivers to the appropriate stations, set the respective radials, and confirm that both CDI indicators are centred. The aircraft is at the intersection when both needles are simultaneously centred with correct TO/FROM indications.
GPS and Intersections
GPS/FMS databases contain all published intersections as named waypoints. When the FMS shows a named intersection, it has been identified by GPS — cross-check with VOR when available on critical approach fixes.
