Intermediate Approach

The intermediate approach is the phase of an instrument approach between the initial approach fix (IAF) and the final approach fix (FAF). During the intermediate approach, the aircraft configures for the final approach — reducing speed, lowering flaps to an intermediate setting, completing checklists — while maintaining the intermediate altitude specified on the approach chart.

Purpose of the Intermediate Segment

The intermediate segment provides time for aircraft configuration and crew preparation before the demanding final approach phase. The altitude and course of the intermediate segment are designed to smoothly bridge the initial approach (which may involve significant maneuvering) with the final approach (which requires precise tracking).

When the IF is Absent

Some approaches do not have a separate intermediate fix — the initial approach fix (IAF) is followed directly by the final approach fix (FAF). In these cases, the intermediate segment tasks must be accomplished in the initial approach phase.
