Launch Weight
Launch weight is the maximum allowable total weight of an aircraft at the beginning of take-off or launch. For conventionally-operated aircraft it is synonymous with maximum take-off weight (MTOW). For some specialized operations (glider tow, some seaplane procedures), the term launch weight specifically describes the weight limit applicable at the point of becoming airborne.
Weight at Take-Off vs. Landing
Many aircraft have separate maximum take-off weight and maximum landing weight limits. The maximum landing weight is lower than the MTOW because landing loads are less accommodated in the structure than take-off loads. If an aircraft must land shortly after take-off at above the maximum landing weight, fuel must be jettisoned (if equipped) or the aircraft must fly a circuit to burn fuel down to the limit.
