Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS)
The Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) is a ground-based augmentation system (GBAS) that uses differential GPS corrections broadcast from a ground station at an airport to improve GPS accuracy for aircraft on approach. LAAS provides the precision approach capability of an ILS with the flexibility and lower infrastructure cost of GPS.
LAAS vs. WAAS
- WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System): Satellite-based augmentation; covers a wide geographic area; enables LPV approaches
- LAAS (GBAS): Ground-based augmentation from a single airport station; provides higher accuracy for CAT I and potentially CAT II/III precision approaches at that specific airport; shorter range
Canadian Deployment
LAAS/GBAS deployment in Canada has been limited. WAAS-based LPV approaches are the primary GPS precision approach system in Canadian aviation. As GBAS technology matures and costs decrease, broader deployment may occur.
