Pilot-In-command
Pilot-in-command (PIC) is the pilot responsible for the operation and safety of an aircraft during flight time. The PIC has final authority over the aircraft and is accountable for all decisions. CARs designate the PIC as the person who is in actual charge and control of the aircraft.
PIC Responsibilities
- Determining that the aircraft is airworthy before flight
- Checking weather and NOTAMs
- Ensuring all required documents are on board
- Ensuring all passengers are briefed on safety equipment and emergency procedures
- Filing or leaving a flight plan or itinerary
- Making all go/no-go decisions
- Complying with ATC clearances and instructions (except when safety requires deviation)
PIC Override Authority
The PIC may deviate from ATC instructions if, in the PIC’s judgement, an emergency exists or if compliance would jeopardize safety. Such deviation must be reported to ATC as soon as possible. The PIC’s authority is absolute in matters of safety — no one on the ground can override a safety decision made by the PIC in flight.
