Final
Final is the last segment of the traffic circuit — the straight-in flight path aligned with and leading to the runway threshold. An aircraft is on “final” when it has turned from base leg and is tracking toward the runway, typically descending to land.
Final Approach Segments
- Short final: The last 0.5–1 NM before the threshold; configuration should be complete, speed stabilized, landing assured
- Long final: More than 1 NM from the threshold; configuration changes may still be in progress
- Straight-in approach: An approach that proceeds to the runway without flying the full circuit pattern
Stabilized Approach
A stabilized approach requires that by 500 ft AGL on final (1,000 ft in IMC), the aircraft is: on the correct track and glidepath; at the correct speed ± 5 knots; in the landing configuration; at the correct power setting with power stable; and in a normal descent rate (not exceeding 1,000 ft/min in most light aircraft). An unstabilized approach must be converted to a go-around.
