Positive Control

Positive control is a system of ATC in which all aircraft operations must be under ATC control at all times within the designated airspace. In positive control airspace (Canadian Class A, equivalent to US Class A), VFR flight is prohibited — all aircraft must be IFR, under ATC direction, at all times.

Positive Control in Canada

Class A airspace in Canada (FL180 and above) is positive control airspace. To operate in Class A: the pilot must be instrument-rated; the aircraft must be IFR-equipped; an IFR clearance must be obtained before entering; the aircraft must be in contact with ATC. No VFR operations are permitted.
