Precision Approach Radar (PAR)

Precision Approach Radar (PAR) is a type of ground-based radar system that guides an aircraft on approach by providing the controller with precise azimuth and elevation information about the aircraft’s position relative to the approach path. The controller uses this information to provide verbal guidance to the pilot, directing the aircraft down the approach without any cockpit navigation instruments.

PAR Operations

A PAR approach (also called a GCA — Ground Controlled Approach) involves the controller providing continuous verbal corrections: “slightly above glide path — begin descent now,” “on course, on glide path,” etc. The pilot follows the controller’s directions. PAR approaches are common at military airfields and some international airports.

PAR in Canada

PAR is used primarily at Canadian Forces bases. Civilian Canadian pilots are unlikely to encounter a PAR approach operationally, but it may appear in CPL/ATPL exam material as a type of precision approach.
