Stop and Go

A stop and go is a training manoeuvre in which the aircraft lands on the runway, comes to a complete stop, then takes off again from that point without exiting the runway. It is used to practice landing and immediate take-off procedures under realistic conditions.

vs. Touch and Go

  • Touch and go: The aircraft does not stop — configuration changes are made while rolling, and the aircraft re-accelerates immediately after touchdown
  • Stop and go: The aircraft comes to a full stop before applying take-off power — more closely simulates a realistic short-runway operation

Runway Required

A stop and go requires sufficient runway for both the landing roll AND the subsequent take-off roll. Calculate the total distance required before committing to the manoeuvre. At many aerodromes, the available runway length limits the usefulness of stop and gos.
