Touch and Go
A touch and go is a training manoeuvre in which the aircraft lands on the runway, the pilot makes configuration changes while rolling (flaps, carburettor heat, mixture, etc.), and applies take-off power to become airborne again without stopping. Touch and gos maximize the number of approaches and landings in a training session.
Touch and Go vs. Full Stop
Touch and gos are efficient for circuit training but require the pilot to manage multiple tasks simultaneously at high workload. Full-stop landings provide a complete cycle but take more time. Many instructors require full-stop landings in crosswinds, gusty conditions, or as the final landing of a session to practice properly.
At Controlled Airports
Advise tower of your intentions: “request touch and go.” The tower will issue appropriate clearances and sequence you in the circuit.
