VCTS

VCTS (Vicinity of ConvecTive Storm) is a METAR weather code indicating that convective activity — thunderstorms or cumulonimbus cloud — is occurring within 8 statute miles of the aerodrome but not directly over it. It is a significant warning that convective hazards are nearby and may affect operations.

VCTS in METARs

A METAR reporting “VCTS” means thunderstorm activity is within 5–8 SM of the station. The storm itself is not overhead, but its hazards — lightning, microburst outflow, wind shear from the gust front — can extend well beyond the visible storm. Take VCTS seriously: an approach in VCTS conditions may encounter sudden and severe wind shear from the outflow.

VCTS vs. TS

• TS (Thunderstorm): Thunderstorm is occurring at the aerodrome — thunder heard and/or lightning seen at the station
• VCTS (Vicinity Thunderstorm): Thunderstorm within 8 SM but not at the station — weather observer can see/hear the storm but it has not reached the station

On the TC Written Exam

Know the distance that VCTS represents (5–8 SM from the aerodrome) and the practical hazard it implies (outflow, gust fronts, and wind shear may be present even though the storm is not overhead).
