Vector

A vector is an ATC instruction providing a specific heading to be flown by the aircraft. It directs the aircraft along a prescribed course based on radar information, used to sequence traffic, provide obstacle clearance, or position the aircraft for an approach.

Vectors on Approach

The most common use of vectors is on instrument approaches — radar vectors to final approach. ATC issues a series of headings to position the aircraft on the localizer or final approach course at the appropriate altitude and distance. Standard vectoring practice delivers aircraft to the final approach course at least 2–3 NM outside the final approach fix (FAF).

Pilot Responsibility During Vectors

When under radar vectors, the pilot is relieved of obstacle clearance responsibility in the horizontal plane — ATC ensures terrain clearance. However, the pilot must maintain the assigned altitude until cleared for the approach and must remain vigilant for traffic and other hazards. If a vector appears to be taking the aircraft toward terrain or traffic, advise ATC immediately.
