Approach/Arrival Control

Approach/arrival control is the ATC function responsible for providing service to IFR aircraft operating within a terminal area — typically within 40–50 NM of a major airport. Approach control sequences arriving aircraft from the en route environment to the final approach course, and manages departures until they are established on their route.

Services Provided

• Sequencing arrivals — assigning speeds, headings, and altitude restrictions to build an orderly stream
• IFR separation between aircraft
• Vectors to the final approach course or a published arrival procedure
• Handoffs between ACC and tower
• Departure control for climbing IFR aircraft

Initial Contact

When handed off from ACC, call approach with your callsign, aircraft type, position, altitude, and ATIS code. Approach will issue vectors, an altitude, and a sequence for the approach.
