Aerodrome Traffic Zone

An aerodrome traffic zone (ATZ) is the designated airspace surrounding an aerodrome within which aerodrome traffic procedures apply. In Canada, the ATZ is generally the airspace within 5 NM of the aerodrome reference point, from the surface to 3,000 ft AGL, though the exact dimensions are published in the CFS for each aerodrome.

Entering the ATZ

Before entering an aerodrome traffic zone, pilots must comply with the communication requirements in force: make ATF broadcasts at an ATF aerodrome, monitor the MF and make required broadcasts at an MF aerodrome, or establish two-way radio contact with tower at a controlled aerodrome. Unfamiliar aerodromes should always be checked in the CFS and on the VFR chart before entry.
