Aeroplane

An aeroplane is a power-driven, heavier-than-air aircraft that derives its lift in flight from aerodynamic reactions on surfaces that remain fixed under given conditions of flight. This distinguishes aeroplanes from helicopters (rotating surfaces) and gliders (unpowered).

The Fixed-Wing Distinction

The fixed-wing, power-driven definition matters for licensing. A Private Pilot Licence — Aeroplane (PPL-A) authorizes flight in aeroplanes. A separate category rating is required for helicopters, gliders, and gyroplanes. Amphibious aircraft and floatplanes require a seaplane rating added to the basic aeroplane licence.
