Air Carrier

An air carrier is a person who operates a commercial air service. In Canada, the term is used broadly under the Aeronautics Act and refers to any operator holding an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and providing air services for hire or reward.

Air Carrier vs. Private Operations

The distinction between an air carrier and a private operator determines which regulatory requirements apply. Air carriers face more stringent rules covering operations manuals, crew training, aircraft maintenance, and licensing. Operations conducted purely for non-commercial purposes are not air carrier operations.
