Alternate Airport

An alternate airport is an airport (a certified aerodrome) designated as an alternate destination in case the intended airport of landing becomes unavailable. An alternate airport has the certified infrastructure to support the type of operation planned.

Selecting a Good Alternate

• Must have an instrument approach appropriate for your aircraft if operating IFR
• Must be forecast above alternate weather minima at your ETA
• Must have fuel available — confirm in advance
• Runway length and surface type must be appropriate for your aircraft
• ATC or FSS service is preferred for additional information and support
