Day VFR
Day VFR refers to VFR flight conducted during the hours of daylight — defined in Canada as the period from sunrise to sunset. Day VFR is the most fundamental operating category in general aviation and the basis from which all other operations are measured.
Day VFR Weather Minima
Day VFR minima vary by airspace class. In uncontrolled airspace at and above 1,000 ft AGL: visibility ≥ 1 SM, clear of cloud. In controlled airspace below 10,000 ft ASL: ceiling ≥ 1,000 ft, visibility ≥ 3 SM, 500 ft below / 1,000 ft above / 2,000 ft horizontally from cloud. The minima increase in Class B airspace and above 10,000 ft.
Day VFR Aircraft Requirements
Day VFR aircraft are required to carry specific equipment. The minimum instrument and equipment requirements for day VFR are found in CARs 605.14–605.18. Basic requirements include an airspeed indicator, altimeter, magnetic compass, tachometer (if engine-driven), and fuel gauge.
