Night VFR

Night VFR (Visual Flight Rules at night) is VFR flight conducted during night hours, as defined by the applicable regulations. In Canada, night VFR requires a Night Rating on the pilot’s licence, specific aircraft equipment, and adherence to night VFR weather minima.

Night VFR Weather Minima

Canadian night VFR minima are higher than day VFR. In controlled airspace below 10,000 ft: ceiling ≥ 3,000 ft, visibility ≥ 3 SM. In uncontrolled airspace: 1,000 ft ceiling and 3 SM visibility (where outside controlled airspace). Fuel reserve for night is 45 minutes (vs. 30 for day VFR).

Night Rating Requirements

To add a Night Rating: 10 hours of night flight time, including 5 hours of night cross-country and 10 take-offs and landings to a full stop at night. The night flight must be conducted with an instructor.
