Traffic Circuit/Pattern

A traffic circuit (or traffic pattern) is a standard rectangular pattern flown by aircraft around an aerodrome to sequence multiple aircraft for landing. The circuit consists of four legs: crosswind (after take-off), downwind (parallel to the runway, opposite direction), base (90° turn toward the runway), and final (aligned with the runway for landing).

Standard Circuit Direction

The standard circuit is left-hand traffic — all turns are made to the left. Right-hand circuits are published for specific runways where terrain, obstructions, or noise abatement require. The CFS indicates the circuit direction for each runway.

Circuit Altitude

Standard circuit altitude for light aircraft is 1,000 ft AGL. Some aerodromes publish specific circuit altitudes. At airports with overlying controlled airspace, the circuit altitude may be reduced. High-performance and jet aircraft may fly circuits at higher altitudes.

On the TC Written Exam

Circuit procedures, right-of-way rules in the circuit, and joining a circuit in progress are all tested. Know: left-hand traffic is standard; the sequence of legs; circuit altitude (1,000 ft AGL).
