Landing Gear Operating Speed

Landing gear operating speed (VLO) is the maximum airspeed at which the landing gear may be operated — either extended or retracted. It is always less than or equal to VLE. Exceeding VLO while the gear is in transit risks structural damage to the gear mechanism.

Different VLO for Extension vs. Retraction

Some aircraft have separate VLO values for gear extension and retraction — the extension speed may be lower than the retraction speed or vice versa, depending on the gear mechanism design. Always check the POH for the specific aircraft. When in doubt, slow to the lower of the two before operating the gear.
