Advisory Airspace
Advisory airspace is airspace of defined dimensions within which air traffic advisories are available to pilots. Unlike controlled airspace, flight within advisory airspace does not require an ATC clearance — but pilots are strongly encouraged to contact the advisory service and comply with its guidance.
In Canada
Advisory airspace in Canada is depicted on VFR charts with a dashed magenta boundary. Within advisory airspace, a Mandatory Frequency (MF) or Aerodrome Traffic Frequency (ATF) may be in effect, and pilots must broadcast their intentions and position as required by the applicable standard.
On the TC Written Exam
Know the difference: advisory airspace provides a service, not a clearance requirement. MF areas within advisory airspace have specific radio communication requirements outlined in the TC AIM.
