Airway

An airway is a control area or portion thereof established in the form of a corridor, equipped with radio navigation aids. Airways form the structured route network of the sky, providing defined paths for IFR traffic between navigation fixes.

Low-Level vs. High-Level Airways

  • Low-level airways: From 2,200 ft AGL (or MSL where specified) to FL 180; depicted on IFR low-altitude charts
  • High-level airways (Jet routes): FL 180 and above in Class A airspace; depicted on IFR high-altitude charts

Airway Width and Clearance

In Canada, low-level airways are 8 NM wide (4 NM either side of centre). IFR obstacle clearance is guaranteed at or above the MEA (Minimum En Route Altitude) on the airway. Pilots must not descend below MEA without ATC clearance.
