Aircraft Radio Control of Aerodrome Lighting (ARCAL)

Aircraft Radio Control of Aerodrome Lighting (ARCAL) is a system allowing pilots to activate aerodrome lighting by keying their microphone a specified number of times on the designated frequency within a set time period. It is standard at unattended aerodromes throughout Canada.

How to Activate ARCAL

  • Tune to the ARCAL frequency published in the CFS for that aerodrome
  • Key the microphone 7 times within 5 seconds for maximum intensity
  • Key 5 times for medium intensity, 3 times for low intensity (where available)
  • Lights remain on for approximately 15 minutes — re-key to reset the timer
  • Test the system during approach before committing to land at night

Night Operations Tip

Always confirm the ARCAL frequency in the CFS before a night flight to an unattended aerodrome, and ensure your radio is functional before you need it. A failed ARCAL activation on short final is a compelling reason to go around.
